What are the differences between CPE resins and CPP resins?

2024-12-17

CPE resins and CPP resins, although both belong to chlorinated polymers (Chlorinated polyprolefin), there are significant differences in their preparation, properties and applications.

Preparation of CPE resins and CPP resins

First, from the preparation point of view, CPE resin (Full name: Chlorinated Polyethylene) is obtained by chlorination reaction between polyethylene (PE) and chlorine gas in aqueous medium. This reaction can produce CPE products with different chlorine contents by controlling the chlorination conditions, such as temperature, time and chlorine flow rate.

CPP resin (Full name: Chlorinated polypropylene), on the other hand, is a thermosoluble resin obtained by chemical modification of polypropylene as raw material, and its preparation methods include solution method, suspension method or solid phase chlorination.

Properties of CPE resins and CPP resins

In terms of physical and chemical properties, Chlorinated polyethylene CPE resins typically have a chlorine content of 33% to 36%, which makes them polar polymers, structurally similar to PVC. Chlorinated polyethylene CPE has good compatibility with PVC, and its melt flow rate characterizes its molecular weight. Compared to these CPE resins with low chlorine content, the current CPE series promoted by iSuoChem mainly focuses on the 65% content of high Cl content CPE resin, which is a white powder.

In contrast, Chlorinated polypropylene CPP resins usually appear as white or yellow solid powders or granules, with melting points and decomposition temperatures that vary with chlorine content. CPP resin is soluble in a wide range of solvents and has good hardness, abrasion resistance, acid resistance, and salt water resistance.

Applications of CPE resins and CPP resins

In terms of application, CPE resin, as one of the three major impact modifiers for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), is widely used in the modification of rigid PVC. It not only improves the impact resistance and weather resistance of profiles, but also has excellent processability and dispersibility. In addition, iSuoChem's HCPE resins (High Chlorinated Polyethylene), with excellent weathering, chemical and oil resistance properties, can be widely used in anticorrosive coatings, printing inks, packaging inks, and adhesives.

CPP resins, on the other hand, have extremely similar applications to highly chlorinated CPE resins and are widely used in the ink, coating and adhesive industries. As the main raw material or additive of ink, CPP can improve the adhesion and printing effect of ink. In the coating industry, CPP can be used as decoating for polypropylene injection molding as well as coatings for BOPP films with waterproof and flame retardant properties. In the adhesive industry, CPP has strong adhesion to polypropylene and other materials, and is an ideal adhesive for BOPP film and paper and other materials.

What are CPE resins and CPP resins used for?

Applications High Cl Chlorinated Polyethylene uses Chlorinated polypropylene uses
Inks Chemical resistant, high adhesion, suitable for industrial inks High transparency, suitable for packaging inks
Anti-corrosion Coatings High corrosion resistance, suitable for demanding industrial and marine protection Transparent, water repellent, suitable for low corrosive flexible coatings
Adhesives High bonding strength, aging and chemical resistant, suitable for a wide range of substrates Provides flexibility and transparency, suitable for the packaging field

The choice between the two resins for inks, anti-corrosive coatings and adhesives depends on the application requirements: if chemical resistance and industrial performance are important, high chlorinated polyethylene CPE is more suitable; if transparency and environmental performance are required, Chlorinated polypropylene CPP resin is more desirable.
